The Cheyenne Police Department is targeting cars that emit too much smoke.

Spokesman Officer Dan Long says police have been getting complaints recently about vehicles that emit thick clouds of smoke that inhibit visibility and create a safety hazard. He says there is a state ordinance covering the issue, and violators are liable for a $100 fine.

Long says the target of the enforcement effort isn't so much older diesel vehicles that may put out a little extra smoke as it is vehicles that emit heavy, dense clouds of smoke intentionally, blocking vision and endangering  motorists and pedestrians who may be hit as a result of being obscured.
