A Cheyenne man was taken to the hospital Saturday night after he accidentally shot himself in the chest.

Laramie County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Captain Linda Gesell says deputies were handling a disturbance call in the 700 block of S. Fork Road around 9:30 p.m. when they heard what they thought was a gun shot.

"A male walked up to them and he appeared to have a gun shot wound in his chest," said Gesell. "He explained to the deputies that he also thought he heard a disturbance outside his home and when he went outside he grabbed a two-shot derringer."

"When he ran outside he dropped the gun on the pavement just right outside his porch area and the gun went off," Gesell added. "We don't believe that there was alcohol involved."

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

"He did not require surgery and so, right now at this point, I'm unsure if he's still in the hospital," said Gesell.
