The Cheyenne City Council Finance Committee on Monday voted 2-0 in favor of a proposal to require most city departments to submit spending estimates for the upcoming fiscal year.

The sponsor, councilman Dicky Shanor, told the committee the change would be helpful in keeping council members informed about the budget. Shanor said that while the council has adopted a "hands off" attitude towards the budget process in recent years, he and several others would like more information as the budget is being drawn up.

City Treasurer Lois Huff spoke against the proposal, saying it would place undue stress on city staff at a very preliminary point in the budget process. Committee Chair Jim Brown, who does not vote in committee, said he doesn't feel the resolution is needed.

The city of Cheyenne begins it's new fiscal year on July1, with the council taking up the mayor's proposed budget for final consideration in June.
