Cheyenne Breaks Ground on Civic Center Commons Project

After years of planning, a project to transform a city parking lot into a park and flood control basin for the downtown Cheyenne area is finally a reality.

City officials and community members gathered in the parking lot west of the Municipal Building this (Wednesday) afternoon to break ground on the Civic Center Commons project.

"This has been a long time coming, I think since at least 2013, but yet here we are today," said Mayor Marian Orr. "And we're here because the voters saw a need, and the voters approved a substantial $4.8 million towards this project and with that we were able to leverage other funds."

"This is an area of town that has incurred flooding in the past and this is going to help ease some of the other areas within this capitol basin," Orr added. "It's also going to double as a community park for the development of this West Edge that's really burgeoning."

Orr says the roughly $9 million project is slated to be completed by next summer.

She says people can still park in the George Cox Parking Facility and in the lot north of the Municipal Building, but reminds folks to be mindful of parking signs in the area.
