A Casper man was sentenced Wednesday to a two- to five-year prison term for auto burglaries committed a year ago.

Natrona County District Court Judge Daniel Forgey handed down the sentence to Brandtly Bedsaul, who will go on trial later this year for raping a girl.

In November, Bedsaul pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking into cars at Washington Park on May 24, 2016, according to court documents.

Assistant District Attorney Dan Itzen told Forgey the pre-sentence investigation indicated a number of aggravating factors that warranted the prosecution's request for a three- to five-year sentence.

Bedsaul, who was 19 when arrested, was already on probation for other crimes committed from February to May 2016 when he burglarized the cars, Itzen said.

There were two victims in Washington Park. Bedsaul tried to break out a window of one car, and held and then dropped a pocket knife, he said.

A fight ensued with one of the victims, who was trying to restrain Bedsaul while waiting for police arrived. Bedsaul threw that victim into a brick wall and that victim needed hospitalization for a concussion, Itzen said.

However, public defender Kerri Johnson said Bedsaul was rummaging through vehicles and one of the defendants saw he was confused.

He also has had substance abuse and mental health issues, Johnson said.

She agreed probation was inappropriate for Bedsaul, and recommended a two- to four-year sentence with a recommendation for boot camp.

Itzen disagreed with the boot camp recommendation.

Bedsaul quietly responded "no" when Forgey asked if he had anything to say.

While issuing the sentence, Forgey cited court documents that stated Bedsaul also interfered with law enforcement officers.

The judge handed down the two- to five-year sentences for each offense, with the prison terms to be served concurrently or at the same time. Forgey also declined the boot camp recommendation.

Later this year, Bedsaul will go on trial on multiple counts related to raping and attempting to murder a four-year-old girl last September.

In April, District Court Judge Thomas Sullins granted a motion by his attorney for a second mental evaluation.

Bedsaul remains in custody on a $1 million bond.
