The Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center was named the 2013 Army Communities of Excellence first place winner in the Army National Guard Special Category.

"The Army said, 'Hey, If we become more of a military community, if leadership takes more of an active role in caring for the soldiers and not just train, equip, sustain the force, but actually have a better understanding of how and why we do the things that we do, that we would be better and more successful, " says Lt Col David Herder who is deputy base operations manager at Camp Guernsey.

Herder says the excellence award is a self assessment based on a set of seven criteria.

He says the program is an Army-wide annual award program that assesses all components and dimensions of installation management.
