The open criticism is a stark reversal from just three years ago when Republicans embraced new energy from the insurgent tea party to fuel a return to power in the House.

The intensifying clash between those in the GOP mainstream and those on the far-right wing muddies the party's strategy ahead of the 2014 elections.
