Soldiers on active duty should be protected from debt concerns by the Service Members Civil Relief Act. The act essentially defers action on debt collection while the service member is away.

Now an internet resource, Ask Doctor Debt, looks to offer free advice to all consumers, including active military, about debt issues and their rights.

"Some people are just confused as to what's lawful and what's not and they need to know exactly what their rights are in the situation. We want to be very upfront about providing a resource for them to have that information."

Dan Russell, for the Associated Collection Agencies of Colorado and Wyoming says, Ask Dr. Debt offers information on what may happen and how to pursue ones rights in instances of debt collection.

Russell says the third party collection industry gets a lot of bad press, but he says the majority in the industry are concerned with, and take great care to protect, the rights of consumers.
