ATLANTA (AP) — Americans gathered at cemeteries, memorials and monuments from California to Maine to honor fallen military service members on Memorial Day.

In Atlanta, veterans from conflicts from World War II to Afghanistan and Iraq dedicated a new veterans' park. Soldiers, airmen, Marines and seamen looked on as veterans and military family members sprinkled soil, sand and water from battlefields and waterways across the world.

Vietnam War veteran Richard Traiser helped deliver a three-volley salute in Portland, Maine. He said he often thinks of those he lost in his Marine platoon to this day.

President Barack Obama laid a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. He urged the crowd not to forget that the country is still at war.
