Casper City Council on Tuesday approved the purchase of a new ice resurfacing vehicle and dasher boards for the soon-to-be-installed ice rink at the Casper Events Center.

Both resolutions were passed 6-to-2, with Ward I councilmen Daniel Sandoval and Keith Goodenough twice providing dissenting votes.

Casper mayor Paul Meyer supported both resolutions.

“When you’re bringing a piece of ice in, you have to bring a Zamboni machine in, and it’s kind of a backup to the one we have at the (Casper Ice Arena),” Meyer said. “I wasn’t anticipating the boards and stuff, but it’s all about timing, as it was expressed tonight."

Council approved a roughly $100,000 for the Zamboni and a nearly $430,000 contract for the dasher board system.

Meyer said the city is still on track to have ice installed at the city-owned 8,400-seat arena by the end of the year. He also says the project is likely not going to exceed its $2.6 million budget.

Former Wyoming congressman John Wold donated $1 million toward the effort.
